Computer Simulation Creates Knowledge

xirrus simulation enables you to understand complex systems and to solve complex problems.

Problems of Strategic Relevance

Do you have a problem system with the following properties?

Data und Knowledge Problem

  • The problem is characterized by (numerous) Data und (missing) knowledge about these data. Communication problems, human relations or highly specific professional problems are second-rate. If data are missing in general, we cannot help either.
  • Assumptions, speculations und model ideas may exist, but they are not verified.
  • Size effects render the system complex: the small-scale proportions are known or comprehensible, but the large-scale effect is unknown yet interesting.

Complex Data and Intricate Structures

  • Numerous and complex data.
  • Heavily networked and interdependent, partly inscrutable.
  • A lot of players that act individually.
  • Condradictions and tendencies in opposite directions prevent evident conclusions.

Dynamics and Self-Dynamics

  • The system keeps on changing, even without your intervention.
  • Numerous side-actions and long-range effects with dependencies that are unclear, invisible or even fully unknown.
Then you are right at xirrus simulation.

Examples

  • Well-Founded Decisions

Do you have a model at hand to explain the data you observe? Or even several such models? xirrus simulation is able to verify the consistency of your model with your data, to validate your models, or to invalidate false speculations.

The simulation provides insight to the mechanisms that perform the observations you make. Thus, you will be able to better understand these mechanisms, to correctly interpret your observations, and to come to the correct, well-founded decisions.

By means of this insight, you also will be able to refine your models or develop new, even better plans.

  • Complement of the Analysis with Dynamic Simulation

Do you use statistical methods, clustering or data mining? Indeed, you may have noticed that dynamic systems with individual interactions are statistically hard to grasp. Thus they are of limited use. However, more complex, more dynamic models are needed to evaluate the increasing complexity of the world, and to stay ahead of the competition.

xirrus simulation helps you to master time-dependent systems with their dynamics and self-dynamics. You will be able to complement your existing static models with a dynamic dimension in order to obtain results closer to reality.

  • Management and Leadership Instrument

Shall your organisation document all processes, organizational structures and data in a clean manner? Much alike a management compendium, you will have all information at your disposal - updated all the time. Like in a cockpit, you will have an overview where your company runs in reserve, where it runs in the red, and where problems will be expected soon. Thus you will be able to take the right countermeasures early in time.

Moreover, you will be able to find and elimimnate weak points - for example the bottlenecks in the warranty processing. You will be able to foresee critical situations - for example when an employee falls ill who pulled the strings, and nobody was aware of this. Then you could have established a substitute before. You will be able to estimate the consequences of change - for example, whether the production line is capable of delivering the aimed increase of output, or whether backing is required.

Other than that mentioned, using clear structure and documentation, you will not only provide a basis for a smooth and effective operation, but also for a quality management audit followed by the corresponding certification.

Our Competent Background

The xirrus partners obtained their PhD from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich for their research in computational physical chemistry. They performed computer simulations of chemical reactions, biochemical structures and phase transitions and developed, refined and implemented the models describing such phenomena.

In such simulations, one typically has a large amount of interacting particles, whose interactions are basically known, but their bulk behaviour is not. It is the aim of the simulation to get a detailed insight about how the bulk properties are accomplished. Such simulations usually comprise thousands of particles, require a lot of individual data, plenty of processor time and memory, and much statistical, mathematic and software know-how, as does the corresponding analysis.

These basic mechanisms - a multitude of actors with certain properties and certain interactions - also emerge in many other situations. From the behaviour of individuals, it is possible to conclude bulk phenomena through simulation. An example: from the comprehensible behaviour of a car driver - she brakes when she sees brake lights - it is possible to deduce bulk properties like locations of frequent traffic jam or dodge paths.

xirrus is developing a simulation framework aiming at low latency: a new simulation or application shall be running and producing results without the time-consuming need to develop computer programs first.
